Matt Rice did not wait long to become the all-time RBI leader in WKU History. In the top of the first, Matt Rice got a groundout RBI scoring Jared Andreoli and giving the Hilltoppers an early lead. However, topper fans would have little else to cheer about all weekend. Topper fans saw a 2-1 lead quickly disappear on 5 unearned runs in the seventh inning of the first game, while the second game was a complete blowout 11-3. The third game was an interesting one as the Tops managed to rally back on three separate occasions (2nd, 6th, and 8th innings) to enter the bottom of the 8th tied. However, Troy scored three in the bottom of the frame and WKU did not have another comeback in their back pocket.
WKU entered the series as winners of 8 of their last 10 games, and only one game behind Troy in the Sun Belt Standings. This momentum did not carry over, and WKU could not capitalize on the opportunity to take first place. Instead, WKU fell to a three way tie for third, but there is still plenty of baseball left to play. WKU needs to quickly forget this series as #3 Vanderbilt comes to Nick Denes Field on Tuesday Night. If the storms hold off, WKU will have the opportunity to revenge their 9th inning loss to the Commodores back in March.
